How to Replace an audi replacement key cost G28 Engine Speed Sensor

Charles the Humble Technician teaches how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. This sensor is located on the outside of the transmission just above the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU through an uncolored wire T55/49, then to the tachometer located on the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is located at the edges of the transmission, directly above the flywheel ring. The sensor transmits signals through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU then utilizes this information to regulate the boost, fuel, and timig. It also sends signals to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor serves as a reference for comparing with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu must be aware when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is so it can activate spark and injectors according to the situation.

If this sensor fails the ECU will display the P00160 error, which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are not in sync and possibly indicating chain stretch or a jumped link on the upper timing chain. However, the code won't be displayed on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

Testing is a bit challenging because there are two connector pins, and they have different functions but the most effective way to test it is to measure resistance between the sensor and the ECU. It should read approximately 1000 ohms if the sensor is at full operation. If you're having issues with this part, check for signs of oil or coolant in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, when accelerating from highway paytoll at full speed I noticed a significant reduction in power. It was like the engine was running out of gas. Or my injectors weren't firing. I took out the spark plugs this morning, three were soaked in gasoline, and the 4th was dry. I placed a tissue over each injector hole and when i start the engine with no sparks, the ones that have gazoline pop right out. The fourth one remains shut. I tested the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55/30/55/48/55/14/55/48/ I got zero Ohm. I assume that the problem is elsewhere.

I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car will start when the G28 is unplugged, and it works fine when the G28 connected. However the intermittent misfire issue still occurs at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62), even when unplugged, still shows a temperature of -49c. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar while the actual pressure is zero.

I'm not certain what to do, but i feel i have pretty much completely ruled out all other possibilities. But i am afraid I may have missed something. If anyone has any ideas please share them! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump of the g28 gets a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is similar to the G4 sender and works on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily locate the spare in a salvage shop or parts store. Testing them is easy to do - just put your DMM in resistance mode and measure the resistance between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector end up) and 2 (2nd from the left on the black end of the connector). They must be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU of our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY ADU) engines requires to know the speed and position of the crankshaft to determine timing of fuel injectors, etc. To accomplish this, it uses a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If either of these go badly, you will see codes on the diagnostic scanner which can lead to engine shutdown.

Some of the signs of a failed G28 sensor include an inaccurate rev counter for the gearbox and gears that shift faster than normal and/or a misfire when in gear. It is possible that your sensor is failing and needs to be replaced if you experience any of these symptoms. The good news is they are quite affordable and readily available particularly if you're looking at the Bosch sensor, which is what we have. Alternatively, GM's version of this component is an option.

5. Tachometer

A malfunctioning engine speed sensor could be the reason behind many issues in your vehicle.
