Best Robot Vacuums and Mop Combos

The best way to keep your home clean is with a robot vacuum. It can remove pet hair, dust, and other particles on the surface.

Some robots connect to smart assistants such as Alexa and Google Assistant for a hands-free experience. Look for models that are rechargeable and continue cleaning the area they left.

1. iRobot s8

This smart robot mop and vacuum is a great option for a wide range of households. It is able to vacuum and mop well and is extremely navigable using both GPS and laser sensors, and offers a broad range of controls and features accessible through the app. It comes with a useful feature that lets you create cleaning zones in areas that require more attention, as well as Keep Out zones in areas that you don't want it to be. It also gets software updates, similar to the other Roomba products, which enhance it over time.

It's expensive but is also among the most advanced robot vacuums ZDNet has ever tested. It's got a huge battery that can vacuum the entire house in less than two hours. It can also switch between mopping and vacuuming with the press of one button. And unlike other self-emptying robots that require you to empty the dust bin after each run, this one automatically emptys into the larger waste container that is above its charging dock.

It also comes with a variety of other features, including intelligent obstacle avoidance that uses cameras and processor-powered smarts to recognize obstacles. It isn't often entangled or trapped during a cleaning cycle, and it's the best affordable robot Vacuum at avoiding power cables and other objects in my tests. It's not as reliable in detecting pet waste or other dangers.

2. Eufy RoboVac Hybrid X8

While Anker-owned Eufy has made an impact in budget robot vacuums, it hasn't previously offered an all-in-one model which can also mop. The X8 Hybrid is a new model that comes with a variety of features that are advanced and can compete with more expensive models.

The main selling point of Eufy's the X8 is its laser navigation. Previous Eufy devices have constructed a rough map of your home utilizing infrared sensors and bumping into things but the X8's laser mapping technology is far more precise. It takes less time to create an extensive map of your home and can store multiple maps. This is ideal for multi-floored homes.

The X8 is a decent vacuum cleaner on bare floors. It can easily sling debris under the side brushes and into the 400ml dustbin. Its tyres are adept at hugging edges and corners, despite being circular. It's not a great kitty litter eater, however, with our tests showing it is able to remove around 90% of the fur from hard floors.

There's a mopping mode that utilizes the same water tank as the vacuuming one. While this is great for loose spills however, you aren't able to regulate the amount of water it uses which can limit its effectiveness for more serious staining. It is effective at picking up pet hair. It has a higher rate of pick-up than the Roborock S7.

3. Miele RX2

Miele's RX2 robotic vacuum is renowned for its quiet, efficient appliances. It has a beautiful design, superb navigation and a powerful cleaning power. However, it has a few operational oddities that prevent it from being ranked as the top overall smart robot vacuum.

The RX2 is equipped with a dual-sensor mapping technology that uses a LIDAR to map an area and a pair of 3D scanning cameras for detecting and staying clear of obstacles (such as furniture legs or pet waste). Once the room has been mapped, you can designate virtual no-go areas and sections that you would like to be the robot. You can also start an automatic clean or manually change the cleaning mode, view live feeds from the onboard cameras and more from the main screen.

The RX2's sensors work well, registering furniture and other obstructions in real-time. The suction and sweeping abilities are outstanding, effectively taking away surface debris from carpets of medium pile as well as embedded dust on floors. However, it's not exactly the most flexible robot available. Like many other robots it's not a very good climber and has trouble with things like metal threshold transition strips.

A lot of people purchase a robotic vacuum for the ease of setting a schedule in an app and not thinking about it for weeks at an time. It's important that a robot is capable of doing the job so our ZDNet staff has compared and reviewed some of the most popular models in order to help you select the right one for your home.

4. Shark ION

This budget-friendly robovac looks just like your typical robot but it's an upgrade in performance and features. Its intelligent mapping system creates 2D and 3-D maps of your house and uses them to navigate around and avoid obstacles. It's also able to detect common obstacles such as power cords and furniture legs in real time. This combination of sensors with a bump detector and an infrared sensor that keeps the vacuum off the stairs makes it one of our most flexible vacuums.

It was able to climb over the thick shag carpets and did not get stuck (unlike the RoboVac 11s, or Roomba 690-). Its navigation abilities were impressive as well and its overall score on carpet and bare floors was better than the competition. It picked up 98.5 percent of surface pet hair and litter from our laboratory test samples.

Its controls are a bit more basic than those of the competition; there's an oblong cleaning button at the top and you can start it from the app, or by voice command with Alexa or Google Assistant. You can also schedule daily or weekly cleanings, set up no-go zones and check the history of cleaning. Covered in stylish dark gray plastics, Ion feels sturdy and looks attractive in your home. The rear dust bin is easy to access for emptying and removing the filter the same.

5. Eufy 11S

Eufy 11S is a good option if you're looking for an automated vacuum cleaner that is simple and doesn't have any frills at a reasonable price. It lacks some of the smart features, like digital mapping and Alexa integration, found in higher-end models but if you don't need these functions, you can save some cost with this model.

This robot is very easy to setup and use. It does not require a smartphone app or Wi-Fi pairing, but it does have a remote control that lets you choose between different modes and alter the suction level. It also allows you to manually turn off the robovac on a scheduled cleaning.

In our tests, we discovered that the 11S was extremely effective at removing pet fur and dirt from carpets and floors with low pile. Its slim profile made it possible to pass under furniture that is low-hanging and other items that some larger robots are unable to reach. It was also able to easily pass over doorway thresholds and transition from one floor type to another.

The 11S, as with other robots, can also eat certain objects, like cords and cat toys. The manufacturer suggests you keep these objects off the ground and using a cord organizer whenever possible. It also suggests that you regularly clean the dustbin, change the filters and clean or change the brushes as necessary.

Roomba 990 from iRobot

The Roomba is the flagship model of iRobot's robot vacuum. It's costly, but it's the most powerful robot vacuum you can purchase. Its self navigation and environmental mapping are a wonder to behold. It also has more advanced automation features than most competitors, such as the ability to set virtual boundary markers with its mobile app. Although the application is a bit slow, and the 980 does spin out a bit when crossing cables, it's a very capable robot vacuum.

We really like the 980 due to its iAdapt2.0 navigation sensors as well as visual simultaneity mapping and localisation (or vSLAM) to store your home's floor plan. It will use this data to create a consistent, efficient cleaning path in every cycle. The result is cleaner floors and a more efficient robot vacuum than most high-end robots.

Other features include dual multi-surface rubber brushes, that pick up dirt from carpet and hard floors and a spinning brush that sweeps debris into the robotic vacuum's bin. Its floor tracking sensors aid it navigate across furniture and along edges, while Cliff Detect helps to prevent the Roomba from slipping down stairs. It will also return to the base station to allow for recharging in between sessions. Although the 980's battery life and bin size aren't quite as impressive as other robot vacuums it's a reliable and solid machine that can keep your floors clean for hours at a time.
